I think it was Jean-Luc Godard who said that the decision to cut is a moral decision. And you look at filmmakers like Robert Bresson, and you can see that every cut is such a crucial decision, that there really has to be reason to make the cut. I get a similar sense watching Gerry.

Maybe it was Godard who also said that your shots are a series of increments. If your shot lasts a minute and it has the ability to last thirty seconds or three minutes, choosing that exact frame to cut is very precise. It’s like how long do you hold a note? It’s so crucial, especially if you’re not cutting that much.
